Weight Classes

The tenths are not covered up on the scales at any NYWA events.  At region events, if you have a wrestler in the 3rd grade who is wrestling in the 72 lb. weight class, he/she cannot weigh more than 72.0 or he/she will be disqualified.  If he/she weighs 72.1, they cannot move up a weight class either.  Wrestlers cannot change weight classes from regions to state; however, they can from regions to the invite.

For STATE EVENTS ONLY, all wrestlers receive a one-pound allowance.

K-6th graders wrestle one-minute periods; 7-8th graders wrestle one and a half minute periods.

  • Team Weight Classes (K-6, 7-8 Regions and State)

    Region & State Team Tournaments: These weight classes are used for regions, NYWA State and Invite tournaments.  

    All wrestlers, team and individual, will receive a one-pound allowance at state ONLY!
    There is no weight allowance at region events.

    (Grades K-6)
    45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 84, 88, 93, 102, 115, 130, and HWT. (215 max)

    There may be 15 wrestlers per team with six alternates for both region and state competition.

    (Grades 7-8)
    85 & under, 95, 105, 115, 125, 135, 150, 160, HWT. (235 max)

    There may be 9 wrestlers per team with four alternates.

  • Individual Weight Classes (NYWA Regions and State)

    *Revised weight classes effective Sept., 2017 (The weight listed below reflects the TOP end of the weight class.  For example, if a 5th grader weighs 101, you will register him in the 102 weight class).

    All wrestlers, team and individual, will receive a one-pound allowance at state ONLY!  There is no weight allowance at region events.

    Pre-K & Kindergarten: 
    40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70 and HWT (105 max)

    Grades 1-2: 
    45, 50, 54, 57, 61, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90 and HWT (130 max)

    Grades 3-4:
    55, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and HWT (155 max)

    Grades 5-6:
    65, 70, 75, 80, 84, 88, 93, 97, 102, 108, 115, 120, 130, 140, 155 and HWT (215 max)

    Grades 7-8:
    80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 150, 160 and HWT (235 max)

  • Individual Weight Classes (Girls State)

    All wrestlers will receive a one-pound allowance.

    Pre-K & Kindergarten:
    40, 45, 50, 55, 60, HWT (max 80)

    Grades 1-2:
    45, 50, 54, 57, 61, 65, 70, 80, HWT (max 105)

    Grades 3-4: 
    55, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 85, 90, 110, HWT (max 150)

    Grades 5-6: 
    70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 110, 120, 135, HWT (max 185)

    Grades 7-8:
    80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 120, 130, 145, HWT (max 195)

  • Team Weight Classes (Girls State), rev. 02-17-25

    All wrestlers will receive a one-pound allowance.

    (Grades K-4):
    45, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 75, 80, 90, HWT (150 max)

    (Grades 5-8); revised 02-24-26:
    75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 130, 145, HWT (195 max)
